Pakistan Prime minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif



Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, born on 25th December 1949 in Lahore, is the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). He has been elected as prime minister 3 times; from 1990 to1993, 1997 to1999 and lastly from 2013 to 2017. He has also served as the chief minister of Punjab 1985 to 1990. The founders of the Itifaq Group and the Sharif Group are Muhammad Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif; his father and brother respectively.


Nawaz Sharif studied business at the Government College University in Lahore and before entering into politics, studied Law at the Punjab University Law College in the 1970s. He was appointed as the finance minister for Punjab under the government of Muhammad Zia-Ul-Haq, later appointed as the Chief Minister for Punjab and after the end of the martial law in 1988, due to support from political factions, he was elected as Chief Minister once again. He was chosen as the head of the Islamic Democratic Alliance in 1990; under this banner he was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the first time.

The first Sharif government was dissolved by Ghulam Ishaq Khan under charges of corruption, a decision that Nawaz Sharif contested in the Supreme Court. On the 15th of June 1993, Chief Justice Naseem Hasan Shah overturned the decision and restored Nawaz Sharif to office. He was elected by a large majority to office once again in February 1997 and was ousted by General Pervaiz Musharraf (Retd.) in October 1999.

Court Cases:

Upon his ousting from office, he was brought to courts under charges of airplane hijacking, kidnapping and murder; this is commonly known as the “Plane Hijacking Case”. After secret agreements with the army, Nawaz Sharif left for Saudi Arabia. In 2006, he signed the Charter of Democracy along with Benazir Bhutto and vowed to end martial law in the country. On the 23rd of August 2007, he was allowed to return to the country despite protest from the armed forces.

2013 elections:

In the 2013 general elections the Muslim League N won with a considerable margin and Nawaz Sharif was elected to Premiership for the third time and was barred from office in light of the Panama Papers Scandal on 28th July 2017. Notable achievements of his governments include; the nuclear tests conducted under his tenure in 1998, the completion of the Lahore-Islamabad motorway and multiple power projects.
